Aleksandr Savchenko, PhD

Aleksandr Savchenko is a pianist, conductor, composer, and educator with a doctorate in music. He is the founder of Piano Art Academy and the author of the Called to Play for Him and ABC of Music teaching methods.
He teaches every student personally, combining strong classical training with practical skills in chords, accompaniment, and ensemble playing. His goal is to prepare young musicians not only to play well, but to use their gifts to serve God through music.
Full biography
Aleksandr Savchenko was born on 26 September 1997 in the village of Bakumivka, Kyiv region, into a large Christian family - the fourth of nine children. It was his parents who, from his earliest years, gave him a love for Scripture, for prayer and for music.
His father has worked for many years in agriculture and at the same time gave his life to serving God: he led the music and choir ministry of the local church, served as a preacher and deacon, and took part in translating the Bible into modern literary Ukrainian. His mother sang in the church choir for many years and was one of its soloists. The nearest music school was more than ten kilometres away, so his parents arranged private piano lessons - and that is where his musical education began.
At ten he began violin lessons, and three years later entered music school as a piano student. Competitions, solo concerts and first achievements strengthened his desire to become a professional musician. A performance of Handel's Messiah by the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Choir left a particular mark: at around fourteen he began to dream of founding a Christian symphony orchestra and choir, to proclaim the Gospel through classical music. At fifteen he came to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and decided to devote himself entirely to music, giving up the legal career he had previously planned.
After finishing school with a gold medal he entered the R. Glier Kyiv Institute of Music, scoring a perfect 200 out of 200 in the piano entrance examination - with only three years of music school behind him. During his studies he wrote his first arrangements for chamber and symphony orchestras, began composing, and travelled on mission trips. He graduated with honours in 2018 and entered the Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music, graduating in 2024, also with honours, qualified as a concert performer (piano and harpsichord), a lecturer in higher education, a chamber ensemble and orchestra musician, and an accompanist. He also studied symphonic conducting.
After the conservatoire Aleksandr continued his education in Italy, entering a doctoral programme in musical art. Combining research with church ministry and teaching, in 2026 he defended his doctoral thesis and received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in musical art.
He has written Christian poetry and songs since 2008, and since 2014 has created arrangements for chamber and symphony orchestras and composed for choir, orchestra, ensembles and piano. Since 2013 he has taken part in evangelistic trips in Ukraine and abroad - as a pianist, preacher, teacher and arranger. He has taught at inter-church courses for pianists and organists and led musical projects. After the full-scale war began in 2022 he spent several months, together with other believers, making humanitarian trips around Kyiv and the surrounding region, delivering food and medicine, including to areas of recent fighting.
In late May 2022 Aleksandr came to the United States. Since that year he has served at Salvation Baptist Church in Edgewood, Washington, where he conducts the symphony orchestra and leads the chamber ensemble. Alongside his church ministry he is the founder and director of Piano Art Academy; his students include children, music college students, teachers and church musicians from several countries. His aim is to raise a new generation of dedicated Christian musicians who will serve the Lord with their talent and with their whole lives.

More Than Piano Lessons
We do not simply train pianists. We develop well-rounded musicians who can read music, understand harmony, play by ear, accompany others, and use their gifts to serve God.
From an early age, students build a strong classical foundation while also learning chords, accompaniment, and ensemble playing — practical skills that prepare them to participate in church music and ministry.

Sight-Reading
Students learn to read music fluently from an early age. Just as children learn to read books independently, musicians learn to read a score with confidence — an essential skill for playing in church, choirs, orchestras, and ensembles.

Chords & Playing by Ear
Students learn to play by chords and by ear, accompany singing, understand harmony, and improvise — practical skills they can use at home, in small groups, children’s ministry, and church.
These three skills are developed at the same time, from the earliest years - preparing students not only to play well, but to use their music to serve God.

Best of all, children can work through the book at home with a parent. When they come to their piano or violin lesson, they already understand the basics of music reading — so more lesson time can be spent making music, not memorising note names.

Frequently Asked Questions
From what age do you accept students?
Usually from about five or six years old, depending on the child. Before starting lessons, the student should already know the notes and be familiar with the piano keyboard. These basics can be learned at home using our ABC of Music program.
Does my child need previous experience?
No previous piano lessons are required. However, young beginners should know the basic notes and be familiar with the piano keyboard before starting lessons. These foundations can be learned through our ABC of Music program. While you’re waiting for a place, we strongly encourage you to continue studying with another teacher so you can keep progressing and begin with us at a stronger level.
Do you really teach reading and chords at the same time?
Yes, from the very beginning. Students learn to read music while also developing chord skills and playing by ear. These approaches grow together naturally, giving students both a strong classical foundation and greater musical freedom.
How do online lessons work?
Over video, with a camera positioned so the hands and the keyboard are clearly visible. Materials, recordings and assignments are shared after every lesson. Many of our students study online full time.
Do I need my own instrument?
Yes - daily practice is what makes progress possible. An acoustic piano is ideal; a good digital piano with weighted, full-size keys is a perfectly acceptable start.
Do students have to play in church?
No. The academy prepares students who wish to serve with their music, and that direction is important to us, but every student is taught as a complete musician regardless of where they choose to play.
How long is the waitlist?
The current wait time is approximately three years, although it may vary depending on availability. We strongly encourage students to continue studying with another teacher while they wait, so they can keep developing their skills and be well prepared when a place becomes available with Aleksandr Savchenko.
